w “HOLIDAY BUYER”S GUIDE” – FLW OUTDOORS: BASS and SALTWATER EDITIONS Excerpt of article by the editors taken from November/December 2007 issues of FLW Outdoors: Bass and Saltwater Editions.
That little span between the end of the fall fishing and the beginning of spring fishing could be a depressing period of time if not for the winter holidays. Not only is Christmas a time to rejoice and celebrate with family and friends—it’s a time to rack up on great new fishing gear. We’ve spent a great deal of time playing with the newest rods, reels and lures, just so you can have a leg up when making your list (or buying for others). It’s a tough job, we know, but after extensive research, we’ve narrowed things down to the coolest of the cool.
NEW BAITS: It never ceases to Amaze us how innovative lure manufacturers are each new fishing season. New scents, new actions, and new materials continue to make lure making the fastest changing aspect of the fishing industry. This year, seductive swimbaits and premium crankbaits, along with an array of new scents and flavors and soft artificials.
RATLLE HEAD BAITS The hook design on Rattle Head lures is sure to make some noise this year. As the hook is moved side-to-side, it slaps a brass rattle chamber. This sound is noticeably different from traditional rattles. The unique design is featured on jigs, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. In addition to sound, the free-moving hook provides vibration and increases hook-ups while reducing thrown baits. All baits come in various sizes and colors. The spinnerbaits are available in tandem Colorado and willow-leaf or double willow-leaf blades and a nighttime model with a single cupped Colorado blade. Jigs sell for $3.99; spinnerbaits and buzzbaits are $6.99.
w “BEST GEAR FOR 2008”– NORTH AMERICAN FISHERMAN Excerpt of article by managing editor Ryan Gilligan taken from October/November 2007 issue of North American Fisherman
As a diehard fisherman and gear junkie, the only place I wanted to be this past July was Las Vegas, the site of the 50th annual International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (ICAST). There virtually every tackle manufacturer in existence gathered to show off the new baits, rods, reels, electronics, line and other gear they were unveiling for the coming year. Here are some of best, most useful products of the thousands I got to see and try at the show. Keep in mind, these items are far more than catalog fodder– they’re what will shape how you and other cutting-edge anglers fish over the next year and for seasons to come.
RATTLE THAT RULES Rattle Head Baits’ unique Spinnerbait ($6.99) features a hook attached loosely within the lure’s head, which lets it swing side-to-side within a brass collar on the retrieve. The moving hook creates a fish attracting clatter against the collar, but probably more important is that it decreases a bass’ ability to get leverage and throw the bait. Rattle Head offers it in 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 ounce, and each bait comes with a bushing that helps change skirts.
w WHAT’S IN STORE: NEW PRODUCTS FOR THE HOME, GARAGE AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS: HEARTLAND USA Excerpt of article taken from September/October 2007 issue of Heartland USA
NEW SPIN How many ways are there to serve up spinnerbaits? While the variations may seem finite, Rattle Head Baits has developed a twist to this time-proven bass favorite. The Rattle Head Spinnerbait takes the action one step farther with its special head and hook configuration. Unlike most spinnerbaits with a fixed lead head and hook assembly, the Rattle Head uses a brass chamber head with the hook allowed to move side-to-side and up-and-down. When pulled through the water, the spinning blades transmit vibration through the frame and to the head. The hook subsequently vibrates and strikes the head chamber to produce a unique sound that works in addition to the flashing blades. The Rattle Head Spinnerbait is available in three weight sizes and three blade combinations.
